Moving Tips

  • Make your reservations for movers two to four weeks before your move day.
  • Make Sure you understand all the rules, coverage and pricing structure of your movers before they arrive.
  • Always make sure your mover is insured for any damages. At Affordable Movers in Dallas, we carry great Department of Transportation (DOT) insurance coverage that protects you from any and all damages.

Packing Do’s

  • Pack important and sentimental documents separately to be easily accessible including: passports, family records and insurance info.
  • Check the user manuals for larger appliances – some have special moving instructions.
  • As you disassemble furniture, tape all the screws, bolts, legs and wheels to the base inside a bag.
  • Start packing items you don’t use often ahead of time.
  • Try to pack all electronic equipment in their original boxes. Otherwise use bubble wrap.
  • The heavier the item, the smaller the box.
  • Use wardrobe boxes for all your closet belongings. Clothes in drawers can be packed inside suitcases.
  • Pack a box of essential items that you will need immediately after the move and make sure it’s the last thing inside the truck.
  • Always pack and unpack breakables over a padded surface.
  • Use smaller boxes for books. They get heavy, fast.
  • Always stack your dishes upward.
  • Use packing tape, not other tapes.
  • Label all boxes on both the top and side.

Packing Don’ts

  • Never use printed newsprint to wrap fine china.
  • Don’t pack with food or supermarket boxes. You never know what funky things are hiding – or if the box is still strong enough to support your possessions.
  • Try not to pack inside used boxes; they could break.
  • Never use duct tape. Use Packing tape.
  • Avoid mixing items from different rooms in the same box.
  • Don’t throw all your kids’ stuff away – do that after the move since this can be a little rough for them.
  • A moving company can’t legally transport hazardous materials such as gasoline, bottled gases and other flammables, ammunition and explosives. Have a fun getting rid of those.
  • Don’t interlock box tops. Tape them
  • Don’t use boxes without tops. They won’t stack properly in the truck.

Household Tips

  • Cancel newspapers, cable, Internet, cleaning service, lawn services about a week before the move.
  • Schedule your utility disconnection a week before you leave– you don’t want to have to pay for cable, phone and utilities when you aren’t there!
  • Make a cleanup closet of things for the last bit of cleaning before you move out – broom, rags, dust pan, mop.
  • Two weeks before the move call the kids’ school to transfer their academic records.
  • Make sure to have enough cash on hand to get you through move day.
  • Remember to bring plenty of snacks for moving day.
  • The day before your move, defrost the fridge and leave your fridge doors open – they’ll stink otherwise
  • Have a back-up plan if your friends or family don’t show up to help on moving day.
  • Clean out closets, the attic, and the basement as soon as you decide it’s time to move.
  • Mail the USPS your change of address forms about week before your move date.
  • Clean your stove. Oven Cleaner works great.
  • Say goodbye to friends and neighbors before your busy move day.
